Friends of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea

The Next Chapter

Dear Friend and Neighbor;

The outpouring of love and support, along with general disappointment with the election outcome has been overwhelming. I have received hundreds of responses to my candidacy for mayor of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea (LBTS) in the form of calls, emails, flowers, cards, and personal visits.

As you all know by now, the race was close, we lost by 100 votes; a mere 5%. This means that at least 665 residents that voted for me want change.  While I will not be in the center seat, I will continue to be at the podium as I have been over the many years I have lived here. I will also continue to be involved in giving back to the town I love.

I am reaching out today to ask for your help to return our town to a Commission-Town Manager form of government. I am asking for available and interested residents to serve as Area Advocacy Captains who will represent their street, neighborhood, or condo and provide the consensus to advocate to the commission on behalf of their neighbors.

Historically, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea's (LBTS) greatest successes came from the residents who filled Jarvis Hall, advocating with their voices with decisions carried out by their commissioners. In this election, that was my number one priority-- to return to our Town Charter, our Commission-Town Manager form of government.

To adhere to the LBTS Charter, it is expressly important that residents communicate our wants and needs and secure the representation of the commission. It is the duty of the commissioner to carry out these desires when they are sworn in and throughout their tenure.

Please let me know, if you have not already, that you are willing to take on this role of Area Advocacy Captain or know the perfect person to do so!  We need neighbors that will keep abreast of the priority issues, inform and engage their neighbors and friends, bring feedback and concerns back to the dais, and when needed, come and fill Jarvis Hall.

We will be a community coalition that stands together and produces action and results.

The next LBTS Commission Meeting is Tuesday, April 2nd at 6:30 pm. The new dais will be sworn in. The agenda of items to be discussed will be put out under "meetings" on the town website the Friday before each meeting. You can them here.

I will continue my practice of reviewing the agendas, gathering information beyond whatever backup is provided, and actively participating at the meetings. I will also continue sending this newsletter to keep residents abreast of the issues as we build this coalition of LBTS advocates together. I have long done such advocacy in our town successfully and would like to continue to do so at the podium with you!

Please pass along this email and my contact information to your friends, neighbors and to residents, no matter who they supported, who are interested in seeing how advocacy can benefit us all!

I look forward to your continued voice and, more importantly much welcomed friendship as we work together to be a voice for positive change! As always, you can reach me at 508-468-5167.

Thank you,

Ann

The Final Stretch:

Actions Speak Louder than Words!

Hello Neighbors, Friends, Family and all registered voters in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea;

We are just 9 days away from the election on March 19, 2024, in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea

(LBTS)!  Early voting has started. Please check here for the location closest to LBTS.

If you are like me, I am looking forward to this election season coming to a close very soon. The

bombardment of negative letters, ads, emails, and calls, coupled with the door-to-door canvassing

and events with candidates all trying to get our attention to tell you why they are the "best"

candidate has been over-the-top this year.

Many of our candidates say they will do things, but it is time to look back and see who really has.

You be the judge! Serving on committees, past experience, and touting promises is different than

getting the job done. Actions speak louder than words!

I enjoyed seeing many of you this week at the League of Women Voters Forum. Unfortunately, the

Town chose not to televise this live. You can now view it here.

I also had the privilege of speaking with Penny Frazier in a podcast about my priorities for LBTS.

Please listen to our discussion here.

I am running to be your Voice for Positive Change. I am also choosing to keep my candidacy

positive. I believe we should all be the Change We Want To See In The World!

Please help me get in during this final stretch so we can get to the business of engaging and

supporting our residents and this special LBTS Community.

Upcoming Opportunities to Meet Me & Share Your Talents:

Midweek Update #9 Marchetti For Mayor

Midweek Response

Friends of Ann Marchetti for Mayor

Bringing Civility and Putting Public Safety First

in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea

Hello Neighbors, Friends, Family and all registered voters in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea;

Two important developments deserve a Midweek Response!

First, as was stated in the Sun Sentinel editorial, it is unfortunate that the Town Commission did not even take incremental steps to put public safety first at Tuesday’s Special Commission Meeting as a result of Sloan Mattingly’s tragic death.

The need for lifeguards and ordinances for public safety on our beach need immediate attention. Whether you agree with the need for lifeguards or not, in light of what happened here last week, and with spring break coming the first week of March, we need to increase beach surveillance and signage as quickly as possible!

As a former lifeguard, we should not use funding as an excuse to not provide more public safety--education, patrolling, and signage. Just this year, Town awarded a $186,000 power washing contract to clean the brand-new pavers on weekends (when we already own the equipment), paid off the purchase of a parcel of land for parking at 4312 N. Ocean Drive early for $1,500,000, and last year contracted out our Public Information Officer to a Connecticut firm costing taxpayers another $140,000.

We can do better for our community! We can find funding if the research indicates that lifeguards save lives. At a minimum, incremental steps to improve public and beach safety should not wait until a new commission is elected and in office a month from now. Our community and Slone’s memory deserves that we do something immediately to protect residents and visitors!

Please call your elected officials to act now. Tell them to increase beach patrols and put up signage regarding the hazards of digging in the sand. Their contact information is here.

Secondly, you have probably seen the barrage of negative ads, "political hits", and personal attacks claiming that I am a high paid “lobbyist plotting to take over LBTS” and asking “Do we want someone who has the interests of big outside businesses and not the residents having control of our town? “ They go further to suggest that ---"Typically people complain about lobbyists… not promote them to be their leaders…We need transparency of her real connections and interests.”

My Response:

As many of you receiving this letter know, I am not typical. I am completely transparent and have nothing to hide about my policy and advocacy work for small businesses in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea (LBTS) and social service agencies in Illinois. First and foremost, it is less than 10% of what I do in my consulting firm. I spend most of my time working with not for profit organizations on strategic planning, outreach, operations, and fundraising.

In addition, I believe LBTS deserves a mayor with my “lobbyist” skillset---good communication and interpersonal skills, diplomacy, capacity to research and attain knowledge of the issues, working collaboratively with stakeholders, and a clear sense of ethics and integrity. I register as a lobbyist because this is the honest thing to do when speaking to elected officials. I did this in LBTS when I am working with a coalition of downtown businesses to expand outdoor dining, improve signage, and downtown walkability. I was quite successful in bringing the community and businesses together on these issues.

These attacks also suggest:

  1. I am "against the transparency provided by the state of Florida mandated Form 6 financial disclosure according to a recent newspaper questionnaire". Please listen to the interview for yourself here, and see where I responded to the Sun Sentinel editorial Board:

Do you support or oppose the new state law that requires municipal officeholders and candidates to file the Form 6 statement of financial interests, and why? I do not support the current state law as it is written. I believe that candidates and those holding elected offices should continue to file a statement of economic interests to reduce potential conflicts of interest as was done with Form 1. Form 6, which includes all specified assets and liabilities does not deter from the conflicts it intends to stop. Candidates and those they represent would be better served by strong and enforced consequences when conflicts are found with the oath they take when sworn in to office.

  1. “Ann wants a possible “private/public partnership” for the pier, which could cost our residents tens of millions if “the public” gets involved.

(Sun Sentinel Questionnaire) What's the best long-term solution to the problems at historic Anglin's Pier? “… Anglin Pier has both historical and empirical value for its residents and our visitors. The best long-term solution is to rebuild the pier, ensuring that the new structure not only meets coastal safety and environmental requirements, but that it ties in with our Town’s Mid-Century Modern brand. The pier should be rebuilt as quickly as possible through private funding entities or a private/public partnership if viable and attainable. Regardless, is should be rebuild in line with the people who would be funding it approve of and support.”

(The New Pelican Questionnaire) Do you think the town has done enough to help reopen the pier? If not, what would you do if elected?

“The Town is late in keeping the public informed. I would increase the number of up- to- date conversations and information on an ongoing basis with our residents and visitors. I would explore and present alongside the owners of the pier what our federal partners and other private entities could assist with to ensure that the pier is completed as quickly and safely as possible. This would include outreach to marine experts to ensure that the new pier considers the environmental impacts on our reef and the ocean. Working collaboratively and engaging experts and residents in the process will both ease the long-term negative impacts and length of time it will take to rebuild. “

As you all should know by now, I am honest, transparent, and independent!

We are less than1 month away from Election Day (March 19, 2024). I am running to be your Voice for Positive Change. Please help me get the truth out there so we can get to the business of maintaining independence and transparency between our government, among neighbors, and with our elected officials in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea.

Please continue to keep the Mattingly Family in your thoughts and prayers.

Update #6

Sent February  11, 2024

Thank You! Marchetti For Mayor

Hello Neighbors, Friends, Family, (adding LBTS Hoteliers, and Businesses);

It has been a long and somewhat sad week!!  The amount of false information and political garbage floating around is frankly embarrassing for a Town of this size and an election that is supposed to be non-partisan.

That being said, I am so grateful for all of your support and wanted to clarify several incorrect points that I have heard directly this week:

MYTHS & REALITIES:

  • I am not  a “high paid lobbyist” for the businesses in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea (LBTS). I am an advocate for social service organizations and the small businesses in LBTS. As a member of the LBTS Chamber and a small business owner myself,  I was asked by the restaurant coalition in 2020 to assist  8 restaurants that wanted to make outdoor dining permanent. I did this by doing research on other towns and municipalities and gathering public opinion cards from 1173 residents and visitors. Ninety-eight (97%) of the opinion cards were from residents, Ninety-eight percent (98%) wanted outdoor dining to continue after Covid-19 and they wanted more space to walk. The restaurants paid me $500 a quarter to speak in a united voice. I believe our residents know best when it comes to controversial issues and I listened to them with outdoor dining when I recommended to the Commission to make it permanent. I will do the same as your mayor.

  • I am not a commissioner who has been in office for  8 years. I have 20 plus years of experience at the federal, state, county, and local levels in varying roles and with all types of elected officials and government staff. I have been an active member of the community for well over 13 of my 16 years living in LBTS and I am very familiar with our local commission and Town staff.

  • This is a non partisan election. The sad tactics of some of  our neighbors running for office are frankly embarrassing.  I am a middle of the road independent that looks for solutions that will support everyone. My father was  a registered republican and my mother is a registered democrat, I listened my whole life to their conversations and positions.  This has afforded me the opportunity to see both sides of every situation and find ways to  compromise for what is best for all involved. I do this in my work everyday and have been very successful.

  • I do not agree with a local hotelier who has recently given many of you her “recommendations for the three best candidates” .  I believe everyone should make their own informed decisions when casting your votes and not make them based on someone’s opinions.  In her letter to residents, she mentions an  "mean-spirited incident" and therefore did not invite me to discuss my positions. The incident was over 4 years ago.  Town staff asked me to request that she remove herself from El Prado Park on the opening day of the Farmer’s Market because she was not a paid vendor.  That day, I later apologized as I could have handled the situation better. Please get all the information and MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION.

This Week, Please Join Me:

  • To make calls to reach neighbors that are working full time or that we cannot visit door to door. Please ping me. We have lists of residents to call and a script.

  • At the LBTS Farmers Market LBTS Farmers Market on Sunday  2/11 from 9-12 and Sunday 2/17 9-12.

  • On Thursday, February 15th at Harats by the Sea for a “Friendraiser” from 5-7pm.. All welcome, light snacks and drinks served.

  • On Saturday, February 17th  from 11-1 pm,  as I finish walking the neighborhoods of Silver Shores- North and South and from 3-5 in Terre Mar. Please let me know if you are available.

  • For private meetings with your neighbors. Please let me know when it might be convenient.

Thank you to so many of my neighbors, friends,  and our local businesses that have been providing support: Taco Craft, Penny Fraser Photography,  Vinnies, and Harats by the Sea.

I hope you will consider reaching out and joining me in this endeavor to increase transparency in our local government and increase communication among neighbors with our elected officials.   For more details on our priorities that you helped to identify: www.marchetti4mayor.com.

Thank You! Marchetti For Mayor

Good Morning Neighbors, Friends, and Family;

Each week I have been sending out an update email to a small but growing group of people that have expressed interest and a willingness to help get me elected as Mayor of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Florida. I have expanded this group and ask for your patience while we put together a newsletter—coming soon.

In the meantime, I have included the letters below and wanted to continue to give you an update:

  • For those of you new to this, I have successfully qualified as a candidate for Mayor of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea (LBTS), effective January 9, 2024

  • I now understand why they call this RUNNING for office-It is all I have been doing!

  • I have campaign materials (Thank you Florida Printing Group, , Kee Kreative, and SRM Graphics & Printing)  to share if you would be willing to put a yard sign up, or walk with me to meet our neighbors, attend events with me like house parties or join me at public events like the Farmers Market, and/or host a small gathering with your neighbors, please let me know.

  • This week:

    • I will be at the LBTS Farmers Market LBTS Farmers Market this Sunday from 9-12 (I have 2 volunteers this week but am looking for help next week. Any hours help and we have a script and materials).

    • We are starting a phone bank to reach neighbors that are working full time or do not have access to their residence (due to a no solicitation policy in some condominiums). Please let me know if you are willing to help make calls either on your on time or as a group. We have hours each week available to make calls and a script.

    • I will be at Freidt Family Park (near the tennis courts at a picnic table) on Tuesday evening 1/30 from 5-6 pm for a “Treats with Neighbors” dogs and people welcome!

    • On Friday, 2/2 ,  I will be at Jarvis Hall from 11-1  for the Woman’s Club of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Annual Luncheon and pop over to the Community Center for a luncheon at 12.  From 5-7 PM, I will be at Coast Boutique for a “Meet the Candidate”.  All are welcome (appetizers courtesy of Even Keel and drinks provided).

    • Coming up: Join me on Friday, February 9th for the LBTS Chamber of Commerce “Good Ol Fashioned Hometown Fish Fry” from 5-8 pm at the Plunge Beach Resort. Tickets on sale now-full dinner, music, dancing and a Fashion Show by Very Boutiquey: Very Boutiquey. For details and tickets, go to: Chamber Fish Fry Tickets.

    • As you may have heard, I gave public comments along with many of you last Tuesday at the Town Commission meeting. Lets just say nothing has changed and our comments went on deaf ears. The Commission voted 5-0 for everything on the Agenda (see below), except the tennis court rules that would have prevented coaches from teaching lessons, taking up valuable play time for residents. Time for a Voice for Positive Change!

Thank you to all of my donors and in-kind supporters. I could not do this without you! If you are willing to be listed in the Newsletter, please let me know. Otherwise I will keep your donation anonymous.

I hope you will consider reaching out and joining me in this endeavor to increase transparency in our local government and stop needless spending. Gosh I am starting to sound like a politician. Remember, I am not! Just your neighbor and OUR Voice for Positive Change!

For more details on our priorities that you helped to identify: www.marchetti4mayor.com. Please give me a ring 508-468-5167 if you have other ideas or issues.

Thank you,

Ann

Thank You! Marchetti For Mayor

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

First and foremost Thank you! So many of you have helped to connect me to new neighbors, written a check, shared my website, and offered to help by making calls and reaching out to neighbors.

I am pleased to share that all of my campaign materials are in (preview attached). I am happy to drop off materials to you this weekend. Please give me a quick ring so I know when it is convenient to drop off—yard signs, palm cards and t-shirts if you are walking with me or for me. A walking list is headed your way if you volunteered. I’m also looking for a group of people to make calls on my behalf to registered voters. Please let me know if you are willing. My website has been updated with events: www.marchetti4mayor.com.

Things around Town are heating up. I was a guest at the Woman’s Club on Thursday and met with the residents of Terra Mar today to listen to their issues. I will be at the Farmer’s Market tomorrow from 9am-1pm (dress warm!) and would love for anyone willing to stop by and help.

There is a Commission meeting on Tuesday 1/23/24 at 6:30 pm. WE NEED YOU! The Commission will vote on the following important issues: https://www.lauderdalebythesea-fl.gov/129/Town-Agendas

  1. A new extended contract (expiration date to October 30, 2027) and raise for our Town Manager-too much for the job description, a salary of 221,293.78 from $165,000.00 plus excessive benefits and additional compensation:

• Provide a COLA increase equal to what is provided for Town staff each year

• Provide for an additional adjustment to salary up to 5% for performance benefits

• Increase the 457 retirement contribution to be equal to the maximum amount allowed by the federal government as is done in most agreements (Implementation is staggered

with an additional $5,000 in both FY24 and FY25, and then the maximum permitted by law will be provided thereafter)

• $600 monthly car allowance (Note: car benefit is currently provided to the Deputy Town Manager)

• Vacation time to increase by 5 additional days in Oct. 2026 (5-year anniversary as Town Manager)

• Provide electronic devices for business use

• Increase payout of severance benefits to include 100% accrued sick time, with maximum accrual set by the Town Personnel Manual

• Pay 20 weeks of health insurance premium

  1.  Tennis Court Rule Changes/codifying Rules so that violations can be ticketed by Town.

  2. Updated/Increased Fee Schedule for park use, plaza, and pavilion use, special events, events hosted by businesses west of Commercial

  3. Updated Boat lifts and dock requirements

Please share this with our neighbors and encourage people to attend and voice their opinions!

Please give me a ring  (508) 468-5167 or shoot me an email if you have additional ideas or needs. Thank you for getting behind me and all of your support!

Ann

Update #2

Thank You! Marchetti For Mayor

Dear Neighbors and Friends,

A week ago, some of you were able to join me in my home to share my intention to run for Mayor of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and to help generate a list of issues to focus our energies on moving ahead.

On Tuesday, the Qualification Period ended. I am officially a candidate.

Since then, many of you have also reviewed materials, made a donation, and connected me to other neighbors and friends so that we can continue to get our messages out. I just wanted to reach out to thank you all for your kindness and support.

As an update, I have ordered printed materials that should arrive by this coming Wednesday. The Campaign website is live:  www.marchetti4mayor.com.

Thank you also for filling out the “How Can I Help Ann” sheets with your areas of focus. I will be following up with each of you regarding your willingness to place a sign in your yard, host a meeting with neighbors, share social media posts, walk with me starting next weekend, and/or speak with others about what I have and can do to help support our community.

I have strong competition. Two current commissioners are running against me. They have historically required ongoing advocacy to get their support for our community and many times have not voted in favor of our best interests.

Please give me a ring  (508) 468-5167 or shoot me an email if you have additional ideas or others you would like me to meet with. Thank you for getting behind me and all of your support!

Thank you again,

Ann
